Tell me about yourself - How to answer in better way

Most interviews start with this question and most people are confused while answering. Well it is a confusing question and it is so generic that it becomes hard to guess what exactly interviewer is expecting from that answer. Well here is some basic analysis that will help you to answer it in simple and better way.

Where to start from -

Always start with greetings. Say "Good morning" or afternoon or evening as per the clock and don't forget to smile 😊. Next comes your name, say it confidently and clearly. Don't let interviewer smell your fear. Now the actual introduction starts which should cover at least following expectations.

What interviewer expects from you-

  1. Education: Mention it in short and clear words
  2. Work experience - This should be always relevant to job you are applying for. Mention your total experience and different roles you have played. For example, you may mention that "I have 6 years of strong experience in Android Development" if you are applying for Android developer position.
  3. Skills - This should prove that you are worthy to fit for the job. Always mention skills in which you are expert and then mention the rest. So you may say like "I hold very good control over C# and also I know Html and Css"
  4. Responsibilities - Interviewer is always interested to see how responsible you are. So always mention your responsibilities and explain how it is useful for the job. You may mention about your leading activities, creativeness, innovations, management, training, etc
  5. Soft Skills - It really helps interviewer to understand how you communicate, how you explain the things, your body language, etc. These are as important as your technical skills. Through out the interview process please be confident, use clear words, avoid rushing to finish the answer. Maintaining the eye contact is very important to gain the trust. You may find plenty of online resources to learn such soft skills.
  6. Honesty- No matter how desperately you need the job, you have to be honest on each statement of your introduction.

What you should avoid -

  1. Fake experience - Avoid giving fake experience or skills in introduction. Note your introduction drives the interview in most cases. So if you say I know "this", it means you know it and you will have to face related questions too! Rather I prefer a way where you mention what you know and for the rest keep reading and mention the same in interview. Trust me it will help and avoid suffering bouncers when interviewer asks questions.
  2. Lengthy introductions - Do never keep talking in your introduction. If you do that, interviewer will lost the context and will start forgetting key points you might have mentioned at start. Ideally, you should keep introduction short enough, say 2 mins max. Practice for it with stopwatch. Lets not bore the interviewers!
  3. Poor soft skills - Do not let your poor soft skills kill the interview process. Seat properly. Communicate clearly. Most of the cases interview happens in English. Do not use other language unless interviewer asks you. Don't be too loud, don't be too shy. Do not be afraid as our body reflects it clearly. You have to practice a lot to be good at these skills. Do not ignore practicing.
  4. Personal introduction - Most of the cases, interviewer is really not interested to listen about personal life and where do you live and all. He is more keen to know your work than life. So please add these details only if interviewer asks you.

How to prepare for introduction -

There are many ways. I will tell you the simplest one. Follow these steps:
  1. Take a notebook and pen
  2. Write down about yourself. One statement on one line.
  3. Read it as many times till you remember(yes you have to remember till you become expert in giving introduction)
  4. Seat in front of a mirror with the notebook in hand. Start with introduction and look into notebook only if you forget any line. Make sure you have full eye contact with your reflection in mirror
  5. One you reach a stage where you are able to give introduction without looking into notebook, keep aside the notebook, seat properly on chair, the same way you will seat in interview.
  6. See into mirror and start introduction. But this time, make use of hands to explain things in a better way. Try to improve your speech and tones(soft/hard) and make the introduction better.
Trust me if you follow all above 6 steps you will be too confident in interview when asked for introducing!

Sample Introduction

Good morning,
I am Bahu Bali and I hold 7 years of experience in Front end development. I have completed my graduation from PDCP college, Pune and since then serving my skills as a developer. I have strong control over Angular JS and also I am good at JavaScript and Html. I love to design and develop websites and I am eager to take challenges in this field. I am flexible enough to adapt any technology and have a good grasping power too. Currently I am playing a role of senior developer and handling one junior developer. I do code reviews in my team and also participate in client meetings.
I hope this was sufficient about me. Do you want me to cover any further details?

Conclusion
Self introduction though looks simpler, becomes difficult when suddenly asked in interview. It needs preparation and practice to be good at introduction. If we know who are we and how we can fit for the job, we just have to explain it to interviewer. The only thing we have to do is be loyal and confident when we tell about our self.

Do you have any better answer for this? Mention here and help others to learn.
